• January (110) on July 21, 2011 at 9:41 pm | Reply Maine Character Dill is a close friend and neighbor, of Jem and Scout and throughout Harper Lee’s classic, “To Kill A Mockingbird” he represents the childhood innocence that Maycomb County lacks. Maycomb County is filled with people who have lost their vision to see what is right and just, and since Dill is an outsider he doesn’t see why the town is prejudiced. Furthermore Dill is significant to this novel because he is the catalyst that shows the kids how even they can be prejudice. Also, Dill’s friendship with Scout gives him additional importance. Dill is a crucial character to the story’s development. • This page was last edited on 25 May 2020, at 11:07 (UTC). • Point of View I am impressed with the author, Seth Grahame-Smith. I have read one of his other books, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and I enjoyed it as well. I think he does a great job of combining genres with the results feeling creative, unique, and often hilarious and not feeling contrived or stupid. As a child, Capote—the author of In Cold Blood and Breakfast At Tiffany’s—lived next door to Lee. They played together and even shared Lee’s typewriter. Both children were outside the social circles of their close-knit Southern town. As Gerald Clarke wrote in Capote: A Biography, “Nelle was too rough for most other girls, and Truman was too soft for most other boys.” After Pride, Steadman appeared in a wide range of films and TV, including Gavin & Stacey and Orphan Black. In 2014, she played Madame Raquin in Helen Edmundson's adaptation of Emile Zola's Therese Raquin. She's most recently worked on Hold the Sunset , a comedy about a widow and her old flame, which also stars John Cleese – in his first sitcom role since F awlty Towers. 9. It was a sturdy and complex monument to his powers of determination. Yossarian never went there to help until it was finished; then he went there often, so pleased was he with the large, fine, rambling shingled building. It was truly a splendid structure, and Yossarian throbbed with a mighty sense of accomplishment each time he gazed at it and reflected that none of the work that had gone into it was his. Every night before bed I would read and still do. I saw a Twilight Zone Episode once where the main character loved to read and only wanted to be left alone to do so. After falling asleep in the vault of the bank where he worked, he awoke to a post-disaster world where only he was left. He busily gathered together all the books he wanted to read, all organized and stacked up. Just as he chose one to start with, his glasses fell and he stepped on them trying to find them. It was terrible and I remember feeling horrified that this man would never get to read again! Such a thought had never occurred to me. This semester I had to get glasses myself after suffering migraines from reading. I was so nervous at the eye doctor because the thought of not being able to read was too much for me. Of course, I only needed readers, but when I ran across this quote, I thought about how much like breathing reading is for me. • The structure is complicated by parts, parallel main plots, and subplots. This book is very important to everyone because it vividly demonstrates the effects of racial discrimination in a simple, but startling, manner. Its lessons are no less applicable today than they were when the book was first published. Unfortunately, they are still as necessary today as they were then.
